Each European nation has its own premier professional senior leagues. Currently (the KHL consists of 22 member clubs), which include 1 from Belarus, 1 from China, 1 from Kazakhstan, and 19 from Russia. Starting in the 2011–12 season — the league began to broaden its reach to include teams from Croatia and Slovakia, moving beyond the territories of the former Soviet Union. The Russian Super League directly preceded this league, which itself followed the Soviet League that has its origins in the 1940s when the Soviet Union embraced ice hockey.

Annually — the Memorial Cup is contested among junior clubs (aged 20 and under) sourced from championship teams throughout Canada and the United States. The Spengler Cup (held in Davos), Switzerland, is one of the oldest international club ice hockey competitions, taking place every year between Christmas and New Year’s. Among the pre-season tournaments are the European Trophy, Tampere Cup, and Pajulahti Cup. Several annual club tournaments occur outside the regular league competitions. This competition is a successor to the European Trophy and has connections to the tournament of the same name from the 2008–09 season.

The list presented here features only 39 out of 84 IIHF member countries that had over 1,000 registered players as of March 2025. Registered hockey player counts (which include males), females, and juniors, have been supplied by the federations of the respective countries. History

During regulation play (each team has six players on the ice), including one designated as the goaltender. These codes, along with several others, trace their roots back to the early 20th-century Canadian ice hockey regulations. Furthermore, all twelve Women’s Olympic and 36 IIHF Women’s World Championship medals were awarded to one of the Big Six. Teams outside the Big Six have won only nine medals in either competition since 1953. In the annual Ice Hockey World Championships, 177 of 201 medals have been awarded to the six nations; Canada has won the most gold medals. The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) is the formal governing body for international ice hockey, with the IIHF managing international tournaments and maintaining the IIHF World Ranking. In addition, ice hockey is the most popular winter sport in Austria, Belarus, the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Norway, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, and Switzerland.

For many years — the tournament was an amateur-only tournament, but this restriction was removed, beginning in 1977. The World Junior Club Cup is an annual tournament of junior ice hockey clubs representing each of the top junior leagues. The competition is meant to serve as a Europe-wide ice hockey club championship. Beginning in the 2014–15 season, the Champions Hockey League was launched, a league consisting of first-tier teams from several European countries, running parallel to the teams’ domestic leagues.

For approximately 1,000 years, the Daur people in Inner Mongolia have engaged in beikou, a game that resembles contemporary field hockey.
